Penelope passes the Bechdel Movie Test!
Penelope (Ricci) and her mother (O'Hara) appear together in some scenes and Penelope and Annie (Witherspoon) appear together in others.
Granted, the mother-daughter dialogue often centers around getting pretty enough to snag a hubby, but the Annie and Penelope scenes -- thank Goddess -- don't.
I prefer to think of this as a family fairy tale movie, but I know just because the main character is a girl in search of love, it might get cast as a chick flick.
Even so, it's so refreshing to realize even romances can pass this anti-female-objectification test. There is hope!
Even better -- Penelope was produced by Reese Witherspoon, who gave TeenHollywood.com an awesome interview on the subject of female characters in film. She even gets bonus points from me for mentioning Sarah Polley's directorial effort (and working with the amazing Julie Christie, no less) on Away from Her.
