I am forever grateful to DeafRoger for bringing to our attention this awesome video of an ASL-interpretation of Marilyn Manson's "This is the new shit."
For the first time ever, I found myself not bothering to look at the lyrics. Which is a big deal, considering how secretly obsessed I am with music and following along with the lyrics -- residual effects from my speech therapy days.
The guy who does this video has clearly been developing his technique. If you go on youtube, he has another song interpretation video up, almost a year older, Ani DiFranco's "Make Me Stay." Cute, serviceable, but miles behind where he took "This is the new shit" in so many ways.
Anyway... MUST. WATCH. Or else.
Speaking of stuff that's the new shit, I'll be somewhere very special next week on April Fools': Michelle
McAuliffe's Artist reception for her MFA solo exhibit. You in the area? Come along!
Michelle, who I affectionately know from our college days as Muck, was telling me a couple of weeks ago when we bumped into each other on the metro that some of the work in the exhibit shows a deaf influence in it, but was quick to amend: "Not all, it's not all deaf."
Which was pretty cool for a couple reasons:
one... That's a prime example of deafie to deafie elbow-nudge-wink-wink right there.
two... What she was really trying to express was that what she does is also in line with one of my closest-held beliefs about deaf writers and artists and other, umm... how do I say it... less interesting people.
Which is: you can take the person out of the deaf, but you can't take the deaf out of the person.

Love that quote, "You can take the person out of the deaf, but you can't take the deaf out of the person." I can't make it on April 1st. :(
LOVED the marilyn manson video!! I mean LOVED it! The ASL is done perfectly in sync with the music, and so fascinating to watch. I watched it a few times! :) I also liked the guy's disclaimer at the beginning.
Sincerely,
the other less interesting person. :)

I loved the video! I put it on my blog to show it off and also to show off the fact, we have the same taste in curtains as MM does. (not marlee matlin, but marilyn manson... ha!!!)
See you @ the art show! I'm so excited to see what Muck has created.

Oh, my! This video completely blew me away! I'd never really been interested in Marilyn Manson, primarily because he just plain creeped me out looks-wise. But after seeing this video, I have a completely new perspective of and respect for him and his lyrics. Wonderful interpretation. I hope this interpreter does more videos ... I really think this one opened a new door in making music truly more accessible to deaf people.

Oh god. That would have been so perfect for my pre-Shane days.
